Bridgeport Mail Carrier Robbed of Rubber Bands at Gunpoint

BRIDGEPORT — A local man was arrested after police said he held up a mail carrier at gunpoint and stole all of her rubber bands.

Wilson Ortiz, 56, of Central Avenue, was charged with second-degree robbery, possession of a controlled substance and risk of injury to a child.

According to police, on Monday the mail carrier was on her route delivering mail in her truck on Central Avenue when two men, wearing hooded sweatshirts, blocked her truck.

Police said the older of the two men pulled out a black handgun, pointed it at the mail carrier and demanded she turn over all her rubber bands.

Afraid that the man would shoot her, police said the mail carrier complied and gave up a handful of rubber bands. The two men then fled.

Police said officers arrived on the scene shortly after and searched the area for the two suspects. They found the two men, identified as Ortiz and a juvenile male, a short distance away. Police said Ortiz had the rubber bands wrapped around his left wrist.
