Thereby opening the door still further for China
/Not content with curtailing domestic supplies, Biden has ordered a halt to US funding of foreign fossil fuel projects. He thus joins the rest of the western worlds’ agreement to end all oil, gas, and coal development, and de-industrialize their countries. China says it will stop funding coal plants; it has yet to do so, nor has it stopped building new ones within its own borders (and India flat out refuses to even pay lip service to the idea). The far-left Council on Foreign Relations reports on China’s progress so far:
While Xi’s pledge is a step in the right direction, the fact that it does not extend to projects within China’s borders will greatly lessen its impact. China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, generates one thousand gigawatts of coal power domestically, accounting for over half of the globe’s total and more than four times that of the second- and third-largest users (India and the United States).
China continues to add coal-fired power plants within its borders, bringing forty-one gigawatts of coal power on line in 2020 alone, which accounted for seventy-five percent of the global total. Even if Xi’s announcement reduces future carbon dioxide emissions by two hundred million tonnes per year, that is only half a percent of annual global emissions. Until China moves away from coal-fired power domestically in addition to fulfilling Xi’s pledge to stop backing coal power abroad, it will be much more difficult [impossible — ED] to address climate change.
China has literally hundreds of billions invested in fossil fuel production in Africa and the rest of the Third World, and is dependent on those fuel supplies to run its economy. Is it likely that it will beggar itself to satisfy the Western Hystericals, especially when Ol’ Dependables is begging China, Russia and Opec to increase their oil production? Only the most naive fools would believe that, and fortunately for China, the US has a huge supply of them.
“But dependency on others is our goal”, White House energy expert Peppermint Psaki told FWIW, when questioned on this surrender. “It shows that we trust them, that we want to be friends. Russia, China, Iran: if these countries know that we’ve voluntarily handed over our economy to them and are counting on them not to hurt us, a whole new bond will spring up between us, and we will have world peace. That, and unicorn ranches to visit in our western states — everyone knows how much Kruschev loved Disneyland, and we’re sure Chairman Xi will similarly enjoy wearing a cowboy hat and riding our new hooved pets, once we invent them.”
Limiting fracking as much as he possibly could
Blocking oil and gas pipelines
Opening negotiations for major nuclear arms reductions
Cutting U.S. military spending
Trying to tamp down tensions with Russia’s ally Iran
Obama did all these things, Trump reversed them, Biden is bringing them back.
