Florida Republican Matt Gaetz says 'Trump alone' must be 2024 nominee
Rep. Matt Gaetz gave a full-throated endorsement of former President Donald Trump for the 2024 GOP nomination on Wednesday as other conservatives blamed the ex-president for the Republican Party's middling performance in the midterm elections.
While some conservative commentators lashed out at Trump after several of his endorsed candidates lost their races Tuesday, Gaetz wrote in a Daily Caller op-ed that a Trump 2024 run is "necessary" to "continue to disrupt and serve the people against the Swamp."
"The job President Trump started was not finished. Only Trump can be trusted to enact the ‘America First’ agenda he ran on in 2016. We won’t accept any imitation," Gaetz wrote.

Rep. Matt Gaetz scraps plans to attend Trump 2024 announcement
WASHINGTON — Diehard pro-Trump Rep. Matt Gaetzcanceled his plans to attend the former president’s launch of his 2024 campaign Tuesday night, citing bad weather.
Gaetz (R-Fla.), who had been one of a handful of Republican lawmakers expected to attend, told reporters he would be there “in spirit,” according to a tweet by Associated Press correspondent Farnoush Amiri.
The weather in Washington was dreary Tuesday, with rain falling intermittently from an overcast sky, but Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in northern Virginia — the closest to the Capitol — was operating normally, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
National Review reporter John McCormack questioned Gaetz’s excuse, tweeting images of the forecast for Washington and Palm Beach, Fla. (sunny and low 80s), side by side along with the FAA update for Reagan National.
Trump stood by Gaetz when he was accused (accurately, I suspect) of being a crazed sex pervert, so you might expect some loyalty here, but Gaetz never struck me as anything but a miserable, unprincipled opportunist, so his fleeing when the going has gotten tough comes as no real surprise.
