What's frightening is how easily this could happen here, and probably will

Or, as Professor William Jacobson puts it, “When Fascism Comes to America, it Will Look Just Like Justin Trudeau’s Canada

Trudeau’s dangerous not just because he’s abusing Canadians, but because he is providing the wish list for crackdowns by Democrats in the U.S.: “every single bank, credit union, investment broker and insurance provider in the country has been deputized to figure out if they have a blockader as a client, and to immediately freeze their accounts if so.”

Over at Town Hall this morning, Derek Hunter has a more optimistic take: Canada Shows Why it’s Called “American Exceptionalism”

Canada is not like the United States. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms grants Canadians various rights that, if you don’t think about it, are similar in a lot of ways to the rights we enjoy here. But there’s a major difference.

Our Constitution grants exactly zero rights to anyone, it acknowledges the rights with which we were born and denies the federal government the ability to infringe upon them. The Canadian Charter gives citizens certain rights, explicitly. If a government can grant rights, there is no justification for them not being able to take them away, temporarily or permanently.

When Trudeau invoked emergency powers, US conservatives recoiled in horror. Canadians did not.

I think Hunter is far too optimistic about our chances of evading the coming boot in our faces. He’s right that the majority of Canadians (68%, by one poll) approves of their government’s crushing the protestors, but most Americans, schooled to believe, like Canadians, that individual rights are a gift from the government and easily revoked “when circumstances warrant”, would also approve. That was proved over the past two years, and indeed, I think the entire exercise was precisely to condition the populace to accept the new totalitarianism.

Couple that with the freezing of funds of unpopular organizations and companies, the refusal to process electronic payments such as credit cards, the demonetizing and even complete blocking of websites that offend our rulers, and the eager complicity and cooperation of the media to crush dissenters, and what’s going on up in Canada could quickly become the new accepted normal here.

And right on cue…

I’m so old, I remember when this photo of insensitivity went viral:
