Greenwich Police arrest woman for illegally practicing law

GREENWICH — A 59-year-old woman who bills herself as a “life coach” and communications professional is facing criminal charges that she practiced law without a license, according to police.

Lisa Nkonoki of Farmington was served an arrest warrant at Greenwich police headquarters on Sunday, charging her with illegal practice of law and first-degree criminal attempt at larceny, which are both felonies.

“She allegedly acted as a legal adviser, when she’s not a legal adviser,” police Lt. Martin O’Reilly said of the charges.

Her arrest stemmed from a complaint lodged with police by a Greenwich woman in 2018, police said. The woman was going through a divorce and was put into contact with Nkonoki through a third party, according to the arrest warrant application.

The affidavit states that Nkonoki sent an invoice to the Greenwich woman for $170,938. The work included legal research, “gathering data for legal filings” and referral work, according to the court papers. At one point in the divorce proceedings, Nkonoki sent a text message to the Greenwich woman “of the exact legal verbiage for an emergency motion ... to file” in her case, the affidavit stated.

The amount in the invoice sent to the Greenwich woman was not paid, police said. Nkonoki does not hold a law degree and does not have a license to practice law, according to the criminal affidavit. There was no contract between the Greenwich woman and Nkonoki, the court papers state.
