Walmart raises pay of its truck drivers to $110,000, offers free training.

Walmart Inc. is ramping up pay for its truckers as the retailer seeks to shore up staffing amid a nationwide need for drivers. 

In-house truck drivers will now be able to earn between $95,000 and $110,000 in their first year at the company, a Walmart spokeswoman said Thursday. At the high end, that’s 26% higher than the previous average for new drivers. Veterans of the Walmart Private Fleet can earn even more, the company said in a statement.

Long distance truck driving is a crappy, boring job. I got a commercial license in my college days, thinking it’d be easy money during summer vacation, and after riding with a friend for a few days and making two additional trips to western Pennsylvania, I decided that summer construction was the better option. But this kind of money could be very attractive to recent liberal arts grads, because they could work down their college debt while waiting for that dream job at Starbucks to open up.
