Why duplicate effort?

Gannett Co., publisher of USA Today and 250 smaller newspapers, will eliminate op-eds, and cut back on (separately-labelled) editorials

“We merged our editorial and ‘news’ divisions decades ago” Gannett spokesman Dan Rather explained to FWIW, “so really, this is just a formal recognition of that, not any big change. And running op-ed content that runs counter to our own positions only serves to confuse the reader, and interfere with our reporters’ indoctrination efforts — we learned all this at CBS, but there’s no reason not to utilize the technique, gain the same cost efficiencies, in an old fashioned medium like print.”
