News reports that former Florida politician Andrew Gillum has been indicted on fraud charges hardly evinced surprise — he’s a politician — but I hadn’t realized that back in 2018, DeSantis barely eked out a win against this Bernie Sanders-endorsed, self-described “Progressive”. How close? DeSantis barely won, 49.6% to 49.2%
Gillum himself no longer poses a political threat after being found od’d in a motel room with crystal meth and two naked men who were not his wives (Gillum's defense that “I wuz just insensibly drunk — dem udda boyz wuz doin’ da crack” was probably unpersuasive to all but Democrats), but imagine if he’d won back in ‘18? Florida would not be the same, and the country would never have heard of DeSantis, nor have him as a viable alternative to Trump in 2024.
