NYT: Europe is sacrificing its ancient forests for energy
“People buy wood pellets thinking they’re the sustainable choice, but in reality, they’re driving the destruction of Europe’s last wild forests,” mentioned David Gehl of the Environmental Investigation Agency, a London-based advocacy group that has studied wooden use in Central Europe.
In generating exactly the same amount of electricity, wood will release four times as much carbon into the atmosphere as gas would do, and one and half times as much as coal.
