A local landmark hits the market

The horse operation at 107 June Road, in Stamford on the Greenwich border has been put up for sale today at $4.5 milion. Barring an indulgent billionaire with a daughter who’s wild about equines — and I’m sure such doting parents are out there, I doubt the sellers will see this price, because the passion for riding in our area passed decades ago, and the decline accelerated when Mel Gibson blocked the section of the backcountry riding trail network that traversed his grounds. Mel’s example encouraged other newly-minted, newly arrived millionaires to follow suit, and there went that tradition.

But I’ll be sorry if this operation is shuttered and replaced by a new, large house, because it’s been there seemingly forever, and was always a welcome sight, bringing back memories of what the backcountry, including this portion of Stamford, looked like even as recently as the 60s.

Hi, ho Silver, and away.
