Defunding the police by another means
/NYC Council rejects Mayor Eric Adams’ veto on controversial NYPD bill that will force cops to document nearly every public interaction
That’ll be the equivalent of maybe a 20% reduction in force, so it’s a start.
If you haven’t been following this story, the police will now be spending two hours a day on paperwork, rather than on the street harassing shoplifters and machete-wielding madmen. A tourist stops and asks you directions? Fill out the form, detailing his race, age, weight, gender (if the cop can guess it), reason for contact, a land acknowledgement, and an apology for being part of a systemically racist power structure inflicted on blacks sine 1619.
Only about 12% of eligible voters bother to vote in NYC elections, so it’s hard to have any sympathy for the lazy and apathetic majority who let that tiny majority rule. It’s possible that the continued deterioration of the city will stir them out of their apathy, although my guess is that it will just drive the good citizens out, leaving Gotham to its lowest denizens and its richest, who will have private bodyguards.
