Two guns were recovered from the group and all three suspects were arrested. Charges against them are pending, Kemper said.
Kemper said the 19-year-old shooting suspect was arrested last November in Brooklyn for allegedly possessing four guns.
Sources said he was charged in the case and was out on bail.
“Here he is in Kings Plaza, armed with another gun, firing shots in a mall, which is open,” Kemper said at the press briefing.
One of the other arrested suspects, also 19, was arrested for a November 2019 shooting, according to Kemper. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was out while awaiting sentencing, sources said.
The minimum penalty for carrying an illegal, loaded handgun in New York is 3.5 years. That’s a good trap for catching unwary travelers through the state, but it’s rarely enforced against the black teenagers who are shooting themselves and, worse, their robbery victims and innocent bystanders.
