Well, of course we do, but when I saw the headlines yesterday, I immediately thought that we’d just given Putin exactly what he needs to convince his restive serfs that the Ukraine invasion is a war to preserve Russian national sovereignty. Putin’s propaganda machine is already running full-tilt, and our clowns have just resupplied it, hugely.

Yes, his full statement was slightly more nuanced, but the “rest of it” won’t be going over Russia’s airwaves. My working theory for public statements by politicians is that, if you’re explaining, you’ve already lost.
