Welfare Queens

Palm Springs’ City Council is considering a pilot program that would give 20 transvestites $600-$900 a month, just to see what happens. Hey, why not? Everyone can always use a little extra cash, and if twenty trannies are the ones to luck out here, well good on them.

But I was struck by the cost of the proposed program: “Queer Works CEO Jacob Rostovsky told the council it would cost about $1.8 million to provide for these chosen few.” $1.8 million? Well, assuming all twenty get that full $900 a month for a year, that’s (I’ll just pull out my calculator here) $10,800 for each Lucky Pierre, and times twenty, we have $216,000, total. That leaves (calculator again) $1,584,000 for Queer Works’ “administrative costs”. The ladies of BLM could take a lesson from these fellas, lemme tell you.

So far, the City Council is acting cautiously on the matter:

In the end, the council voted unanimously to pay DAP and Queer Works staff $200,000 to put together an application for a share of the state’s $35 million UBI fund.

That’s right, rather than just hand over $216,000 to twenty deserving individuals, the city will pay Queer Works $200,000 to draw up an application to get the money to give away. Welfare math are hard!
