At her direction NYC sucker puncher jailed for parole violation

The sex fiend accused of sucker-punching a stranger into a coma — and released without bail when Bronx prosecutors charged him with mere misdemeanors — was arrested Friday for allegedly violating the terms of his lifetime parole.

Bui Van Phu, 55, was picked up after state officials contacted “the Bronx District Attorney’s Office to talk about the actual charges that were filed because … we want to make sure that our laws are being properly executed,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

“But I took action in my own hands,” Hochul told reporters during an unrelated news conference on Long Island.

Phu was jailed on Rikers Island after his arrest for the parole violation, a law enforcement source told The Post.

The suspect was previously convicted of first-degree sexual abuse for an armed attack on a 17-year-old girl in 1994, according to the state sex offender registry.

He was sentenced to six years to life in prison and ended up doing at least the six years behind bars. He was released on lifetime parole.

Phu then violated parole in 2015 and was most recently released from custody in 2019, according to the DOCCS website.

On July 12, Phu was caught on surveillance camera pulling on work gloves before sneaking up behind random victim Jesus Cortes, 52, and allegedly decking him with a vicious roundhouse punch to the head outside the Fuego Tipico Restaurant at 2467 Grand Concourse in the Bronx.

Cortes suffered a fractured skull and other injuries and is in a medically induced coma after undergoing brain surgery at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.

What was it about “lifetime parole” that the Bronx District Attorney’s office understand when they set this man back on the street? More important, Hochul only acted here when the story of the effect of her no-bail law went viral. Rather than address one single incident, she’d actually accomplish something if she’d direct her Democrat-controlled legislature to reexamine and repeal the 2019 law that’s adding to the ruination of New York‘s cities. But that would offend her base, so she’ll just sit idly by, finger whetted to gauge the wind, and react on a car-by-case basis when a particularly outrageous incident stirs up the press.
