Back on the market after a COVID break

42 Old Church Road (it’s not a Coldwell Banker listing, but that firm seems to have new MLS listings up on the web faster than its competitors, even the actual listing firms themselves) spent a year looking for a buyer at $8.1 million during 2019-2020 before it gave up. It’s back today, reduced to $6.995.

Old Church Road is very close to town — in fact, to the distraction of the true professionals in the Greenwich real estate industry, I refer to it and Park Avenue just to the west as “in-town” — but however you wish to describe it, Old Church is at least very close to town, and a pleasant street it is.

This house traces its roots back to 1710, so it was a contemporaneous neighbor of Knox Tavern, and probably saw British and Colonial troops shooting at each other in its backyard (now the YWCA tennis courts, but time marches on) in 1779. Things are quieter now, though if the current pickleball craze keeps expanding and reaches the Y, we may see a repeat of General Putnam’s near-suicidal plunge down Put’s Hill by frantic Old Church Road residents driven mad by the noise.

But it’s a beautiful old house and a true Greenwich landmark, so I wish it only good things in this sales cycle.

Bonus material: Did you know that there’s a freestanding rental on the grounds of Putnam Cottage? I didn’t, and only stumbled across it just now, while locating the Cottage’s proximity to 42 Old Church. Dorothy Darlington had the listing last year, and rented it out for $2,400, which sounds like a good deal for the tenant.

UPDATE: Historically Yours has thoughtfully provided a link to a Historical Society article on this home’s history. For those of you who don’t read the comments — and you should; they’re far more informative than the blather in the body of this blog — I’ve put it here.
