1904: Roque takes off

Pickleball America poised to bring 28 pickleball courts to Stamford Town Center this spring

A new 28-court indoor pickleball facility is aiming to make Stamford an epicenter of the fastest growing sport in America.

Pickleball America will be taking over the old Saks Off 5th department store inside the Stamford Town Center and installing two floors of pickleball courts. Each floor will have 14 courts.

The establishment is being billed as one of the largest indoor facilities in the entire nation. Indoor facilities have begun popping up all over the country as the sport's explosive growth persists. Pickleball Kingdom in Chandler, Arizona has 16 indoor courts, Missouri Pickleball Club in Fenton, Missouri has 18 indoor courts and a mall in Macon, Georgia is reportedly being renovated to house 32 indoor courts.

From Wikipedia:

Roque (/roʊk/ ROHK) is an American variant of croquet played on a hard, smooth surface. Popular in the first quarter of the 20th century and billed "the Game of the Century" by its enthusiasts, it was an Olympic sport in the 1904 Summer Games, replacing croquet from the previous games.

I haven’t enjoyed a good game of roque in years, darn it.
