Migrant surge sparks spending spree as Chicago and NYC dish out eye-watering contracts: Windy city shelter nurse rakes in $20,000 in a WEEK

The City Council is now carrying out an audit into how a $432 million no-bid contract was handed to medical firm DocGo, which has been accused of mistreating migrants and having little experience in caring for asylum seekers.

Mayor Adams has been using his emergency powers to sign off contracts to firms without contest, but opponents fear the practice is ripe for abuse and waste of taxpayer funds.

For example in the contract with DocGo, the firm was authorized bill taxpayers $170 per night to house migrants - many in upstate NY which generally cost much less - and then pocket the difference.

The city comptroller, Brad Lander, has warned that Adams is using his emergency powers as a 'blank check' and argues that given the crisis is now 18 months old it is no longer the case that is is an 'unexpected situation that merits the broad suspension of due diligence processes.'

In the Windy City, Mayor Brandon Johnson quietly signed a $29million contract with a security firm to build migrant base camps earlier this month.

The city's deal with the controversial Garda World firm, signed last week, includes at least six locations across the city, with zones holding between 200 and 1,400 asylum seekers. It also includes bedding, laundry, showers, three meals a day and security.

Garda World is not only contracted to build the tents, but is also responsible for bussing migrants to the city, raising eyebrows as a potential conflict of interest for some lawmakers.

The firm recently failed to secure a contract in Denver, which yanked the deal over 'concerns (that grew) about the international company’s history of alleged abuses and mistreatment, as well as its lack of experience in sheltering migrants.'

Chicago has seen 13,000 migrants arrive in the city since August 2022, and the surge is expected to cost taxpayers $302 million by the end of the year.

The number of migrants who need shelter in Chicago has continued to increase in recent months, and city leaders have stated they will follow New York's lead in turning different locations around the city into shelters for migrants.

It’s sad state of affairs when Chicago’s crooks have to ask New York City’s for graft tips.

Chicago Democrats have visited Manhattan to learn lessons about how to deal with the surge of asylum seekers which it is also facing.

And Bob Menendez has just opened a consulting firm.
