It looks like one of those temporary, post-WWII houses may finally be going away

14 Spezzano Drive, $685,000. 853 sq.ft., first time on the market since it was built in 1947 (I believe one of the children inherited it from a parent). I don’t know for a fact, but I’ve always heard, that the entire land between Sheephill and down to Cary Road, including Riverside Lane, was intended to be “temporary” homes for returning veterans but, not surprisingly, once those veterans moved in and began raising families there, they weren’t about to be moved out.

Again, I don’t know whether that story is apocryphal, but I could see it happening. Either way, the shelf life of 850 sq.ft. homes probably expired many years ago, and I’d be surprised if we see this one still standing come spring.

Additional thoughts: these houses are unlike those in that other post-war project Havemeyer Park, because the latter were intended to be permanent and were built to last, with plaster walls, hardwood floors and sturdy construction. Although the Havemeyer homes, too, are disappearing, that’s due more to a changed market than because they’re falling apart.
