Some stores in Portland, Maine still require face masks. Organic bakeries, coffee shops, and “artist” venues, naturally. There are even some stores that still have plexiglass barriers in place, a gesture of hygienic theater that was debunked even before the first ones went up.

Rolanda Perkins, Chairman, University of Maine School of Psychiatry, thinks she understands the phenomenon:

“These are people who lost their bearings in 2016” she explained to FWIW, “and never regained their balance. They’ve grown bitter and terrified, and cling to their Gaia religion and Birkenstocks with an insane fervor not seen since the Salem witch trials.
